Understanding Multiple Sclerosis
The myelin:
the insulation of nerves
In the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), nerve fibers are wrapped in a protective sheath called myelin. It works like the insulation of an electrical cable: it allows signals to travel quickly and efficiently.
What happens in MS
For reasons still not completely clear, the immune system attacks the myelin by mistake. This process is called demielinization: plaques (damaged areas) form that slow down or block nerve signals.
Symptoms that vary from person to person
- Intense fatigue (the most common)
- Motor difficulties and balance problems
- Vision problems (blurred or double vision)
- Numbing, tingling sensations
- Cognitive disorders, memory, mood issues
- Bladder or intestinal problems
The symptoms depend on the formation of plaques.
How does it evolve and what can be done
The evolution can be:
A definitive cure does not yet exist, but today there are:
- Therapies that modify the disease (reduce relapses and progression)
- Symptomatic drugs for fatigue, spasms, and pain
- Motor and cognitive rehabilitation
- Psychological support and healthy lifestyle habits
